From mountain crags to city towers high,
The apex hunters rule the open sky.
Not with their beaks nor simple claws alone,
But deadly weapons forged of horn and bone.
With dagger-sharpness, specialised and deep,
They hold the boundaries of the world they keep.
The power wakes within the hidden line—
Of flexing tendons, muscle-driven might,
A crushing force that locks the grip divine,
And pulls the shadows from the morning light.
An eagle’s hold can break the strongest shield,
While variations rule each hunting field.
The osprey bears a rough and textured sole,
With toes reversible to claim control,
To seize the silver, slick and slippery fish,
And match the water to its hungry wish.
The hawks and eagles sport a piercing curve,
To strike the running mammal from the air,
A flash of lightning breaking through the nerve,
A sudden spark that leaves the meadow bare.
On every continent but ice and snow,
These masters of the currents come and go.
The harpy eagle claims the jungle floor,
While falcons watch the urban skyscrapers soar.
From desert sands to tundra’s frozen plain,
They hunt the edges of the wildwood shore;
They claim the ancient, old-growth forest trees,
The high-walled cliffs, the artificial spires,
To build great fortresses upon the breeze,
And guard the embers of their nesting fires.
Perched at the crest of nature’s shifting chain,
They balance life across the open plain.
They thin the rodent, mammal, and the snake,
A perfect order in the paths they take.
The scavengers erase the fallen dead,
To halt the plague before its shadow spreads.
A living gauge of forest, field, and stream,
They mirror back the health of nature’s dream.
Where raptors thrive and cast their shadows down,
A balanced harvest wraps the country town.
