The Jewel of the Forest

Beneath the canopy where shadows trace,
The peafowl steps with legendary grace.
Though “peacock” names the male who wears the crown,
This pheasant family holds world renown.

They seek the warmth of structured, open ground,
Where towering branches and high cover abound.
From India’s heart, where national honours ring,
To Javan woods where rare green factions wing,
And Congo’s depths where hidden Kongos dwell,
They claim the earth and adapt remarkably well.

By day they forage, sweeping through the glade,
By night they fly to sleep in safer shade.
True omnivores, they hunt with keen delight,
On seeds, on grain, and insects in the light.
They strike the cobra, purge the locust swarm,
And keep the farmer’s fertile fields from harm.
They sow the forests through the seeds they drop,
Yet feed the tiger when the huntings stop.

With razor vision and a watchful ear,
They scream in warning when a threat is near;
A piercing call that echoes through the trees,
To wake the village on the morning breeze.

The male’s grand train is not a tail at all,
But lengthened coverts rising proud and tall.
A hundred shimmering eyespots, gold and green,
Without a single drop of paint unseen.
No true pigments cause this brilliant hue—
Just crystal structures bending light anew.

He rattles feathers in a rustling dance,
To catch the peahen’s critical, sharp glance.
And though their heavy cries are far from sweet—
Like weeping humans drifting down the street—
They herald rain beneath the monsoon sky,
And throw an infrasound no human eye
Can ever see, yet distant birds can feel,
A secret vibration, wondrous and real.
