The Concept of Meson Particles

Significantly, Mesons are hadronic subatomic particles composed of one quark and one anti-quark, bound together by the strong interaction.

  • Composition & Classification: Mesons are classified as hadrons and belong to the group of bosons because they have an integer spin. They consist of a quark-antiquark pair.
  • Physical Size: They have a diameter of roughly one femtometer (not a hectometer), which is about 1.2 times the size of a proton or neutron.
  • Stability & Decay: All mesons are unstable. The longest-lived last for only a few hundredths of a microsecond. Charged mesons decay into electrons and neutrinos, while uncharged mesons may decay into photons.
  • Occurrence: Outside atomic nuclei, natural mesons are short-lived products of high-energy collisions, such as cosmic rays interacting with ordinary matter. They are also produced artificially in particle accelerators.
  • Nuclear Force Mediation: The exchange of virtual mesons between nucleons (protons and neutrons) helps explain the strong nuclear force that binds atomic nuclei together.
