The Age of the Dynamic Dinosaurs

Unlike modern lizards and crocodiles,
With their sprawling leg stance,
Dinosaurs held their columnar legs
Directly beneath their bodies,
Similar to modern mammals and birds.

Modern paleontological research indicates
That non-avian dinosaurs were active,
Dynamic animals with elevated metabolisms,
Rather than sluggish, cold-blooded creatures.

All known dinosaurs were oviparous egg-layers;
Extensive fossil evidence, including nests,
Show dedicated behaviours and, in some species,
Attentive parental care for their young.

Their varied anatomy spanned all sizes—
From tiny, chicken-sized creatures,
To massive sauropods as long as aeroplanes,
With coverings of scales, plates, spikes, and feathers.

Plant-eaters like the long-necked Brachiosaurus
And frilled Triceratops consumed lush ferns,
High tree leaves, and forest vegetation,
Sometimes swallowing stones called gastroliths
To grind up food in their stomachs.

Meat-eaters like the Tyrannosaurus rex
And Allosaurus possessed sharp, serrated,
Knife-like teeth and specialised claws to hunt,
Sometimes operating in social, predatory groups.
While omnivores, such as the Oviraptor,
Mixed vegetation, insects, and eggs in their diets.

Fossilised trackways and clustered nesting grounds
Confirm that many dinosaur species travelled in herds,
Cared for communal nesting sites, and raised their young.

Dense woodlands provided vital shade,
Nesting cover, and abundant foliage for herbivores,
While offering camouflage for ambush predators.
Wetland and lake habitats supported diverse plant life,
Water-based prey, and semi-aquatic hunters like Spinosaurus.

Expansive plains allowed large herds of plant-eaters
And fast-running predators plenty of room to roam,
While coastal shores supplied marine vegetation and seafood.
Certain resilient species even adapted to arid conditions,
Surviving in extreme dune environments
With limited water and sparse vegetation.
