Crocodilians rule as prehistoric kings,
With four short legs and the power a tail brings.
Lizard-shaped reptiles with hides rough and scaled,
Whose ancient dominance has never paled.
Though they look similar to the untrained eye,
Differences emerge as you watch them pass by.
Alligators wear coats of a darker hue,
In freshwater rivers and swamps in your view.
Their snouts are broad, rounded, and wide,
Hiding secrets and teeth deep inside.
But crocodiles favor the salt and the brine,
Where coastal and brackish waters entwine.
Their grayish-green bodies are built for the sea,
With tapered, triangular snouts, flowing free.
Look close at the jaw when their mouths tightly close:
An alligator’s fourth tooth never shows,
Tucked neatly away in a socket up high.
But a crocodile’s fourth tooth gleams out at the sky.
Across every species, the rule stays the same:
The males grow much larger to conquer the game.
The Saltwater giant, a titan of myth,
Stretches past six meters of muscle and lith.
Yet Cuvier’s Dwarf Caiman, the smallest of all,
Stays under two meters, compact and small.
They can weigh past a ton, though most average less,
Ruthless, apex predators born to oppress.
From fishes and frogs to the birds in the air,
Mammals and carrion, they hunt everywhere.
For sixty long years or even much more,
These ancient survivors patrol the shore.
In the United States, two cousins reside:
The American alligator, swimming with pride,
And the American crocodile, sharing the zone,
Making tropical marshes and waters their own.
They are the oldest, most successful of peers,
Enduring the planet for millions of years.
Like Deinosuchus, the “terrible” beast,
Who once turned the greatest of dinosaurs to a feast.
With a two-meter skull found in Texan clay,
It stretched fifteen meters in its golden day.
Like the American alligator waiting to strike,
These modern-day monsters are built much the like.
With vertical pupils that slit in the night,
They track down their prey in the fading light.
