Two great events shape the history of Bangladesh. These events gave our nation a proud and free place in the world: the Language Movement of February 21 and the Liberation War of 1971. After a nine-month armed fight, our national honour, strength, and culture joined together to build a free country. Beyond the war itself, February 21 set the core goal. It protected the honour of our mother tongue and fought against cruel rule.
Language Day: February 21
- The movement on February 21 was more than just a fight for Bengali as a state language.

The Liberation War
- The energy from the Language Movement grew into a nationwide push for self-rule.
- Unfair money rules and lost political rights by West Pakistan made living together impossible.
- Rulers started a brutal military attack on the night of March 25, 1971.
- The people of East Pakistan then fought a fierce nine-month war for freedom.
- The enemy forces surrendered on December 16, 1971. This made us a free country.
- March 26 is celebrated as Independence Day, and December 16 is Victory Day.
- The departing rulers caused massive damage to our people and land before they left.
